The Oil Change
We have all received notice at one time or another from an automotive dealer or maintenance shop that it is time to bring our vehicle in for an oil change. Based upon mileage, elapsed time, or a combination of both, they are reminding us of the importance that clean oil has in the continued health of an engine.
I own three vehicles, each from a different manufacturer. As timing would have it, they all came due for an oil change within a six week period. This gave me the opportunity to visit three different shops and observe the process each used in servicing my vehicles.
The Process
As it turned out, the process used with each vehicle was the same. After arriving at the shop and filling out some basic paperwork, I was asked if there were any problems they should be aware of while performing the service. Then, a walk around of the vehicle using a clipboard with a checklist was completed. This included inspecting windshield wipers, lights, tires, and checking the horn for operation. At that point, any discrepancies were discussed and I was asked for authorization to make replacements or repairs.
The Checklist
When I returned to pick up each vehicle, a more comprehensive printed report and checklist was presented for review. This included the condition of various filters, fan belts, fluids, and the suspension system. This gave me once again an opportunity to address any items that needed attention. Since I was preparing to drive one of the vehicles out of state on vacation, I took the opportunity to correct a couple of items that would make the trip safer.
Is it Time for an Oil Change?
We take good care of our cars, but what about our business. Shouldn't an organization periodically take time to assess its policies, procedures and practices as they relate to compliance and risk management? Are we unknowingly exposing our company to potential financial loss? What about the impact on our reputation and employee morale?
In response to these concerns, we have created an eleven-point checklist designed to uncover potential problems in a variety of areas including; personnel, income, property, and liability. Each point on the checklist has several questions to stimulate discussion, thereby allowing an evaluation on the current "condition" of the issue. The participants then use a rating scale to evaluate whether any further action should be taken.
We can't guarantee you it will give better mileage (although it may increase productivity), or that it will unclog your oil filter (yet it may filter problems from getting into your system), but a periodic oil change may be the best preventative maintenance your organization could use.
