Research indicates that new employees are at a greater risk of suffering from workplace injuries than their more experienced counterparts. This can also be true for existing employees who are changing roles and transitioning into a new position.
In order to ensure that employees are properly prepared to begin work safely, employers should take a proactive role by utilizing a new employee safety orientation process. Some of the topics to cover may include:
• The employees responsibilities for safety.
• Emergency actions and operations.
• Evacuations and shelters.
• Personal protective equipment.
• Hazard communication and chemical safety.
• Machine operations (for machine operators only).
• Lockout/tagout for non-maintenance employees.
• Electrical work zone safety.
• Maintaining safe walking and working surfaces.
• Material handling and storage.
Other topics could include rules of the company regarding policies on items such as attendance, holidays, and pay periods. Orientation is a great place to meet new people at the company as well as to get to know veterans in the field. New employee can use this opportunity to learn more about others backgrounds and interests, while also taking in useful information abut their position and the company.
